Sildenafil for men: What you should know?
Erectile dysfunction (ED) is more common than most people realize, and it’s nothing to be embarrassed about. Sildenafil (Viagra) is one of the most trusted treatments out there, helping men improve confidence and intimacy. In this blog, we’ll cover what it is, how it works, and what you should know before using it.
What is sildenafil?
Sildenafil, commonly known by the brand name Viagra, is a well-known medication used to treat erectile dysfunction (ED) in men. Originally developed for heart problems, it was discovered to have a surprising effect: improving blood flow to certain parts of the body, including the penis. Since its FDA approval in 1998, sildenafil has helped millions of men regain confidence and sexual function. If you’re considering sildenafil or already have a prescription, here’s what you need to know.
How it works
Sildenafil belongs to a class of medications called PDE5 inhibitors. It works by relaxing the blood vessels and increasing blood flow to the penis during sexual stimulation. It’s important to note that sexual arousal is still required for the medication to be effective. It doesn’t cause an erection on its own.
Key points before starting sildenafil
Before taking sildenafil, talk to your healthcare provider about:
- Heart health: Because sildenafil affects blood flow, it’s not suitable for everyone, especially those with serious heart conditions or those taking nitrate medications.
- Other medications: Sildenafil can interact with blood pressure meds, nitrates, certain antifungals, HIV medications, and others. When blood pressure medications or nitrates are used with sildenafil, they can lead to a drop in blood pressure. HIV medications and antifungals can increase the levels of sildenafil in the blood and increase side effects.
- Impaired Liver Function: If the liver is impaired, the enzymes cannot metabolize sildenafil effectively, leading to high levels in the blood and decreased excretion. This can increase side effects, so patients may need to start at a low dose.
- Impaired Kidney function: The kidneys help with excretion of the drug. If this is impaired, the drug can build up in the body, increasing side effects. These patients may need to start at a lower dose.
Medication counseling
If you’ve been prescribed sildenafil for erectile dysfunction, it’s important to know that how you take it; and what you take it with, can make a big difference.
Here are some medication counseling tips to help you get the best results safely and confidently.
- For best results, take it on an empty stomach or after a light meal.
- A high-fat meal (like a big burger or pizza) can delay how quickly the medication kicks in.
- Limit alcohol—a drink or two might be fine, but too much can reduce effectiveness and increase side effects.
- Avoid combining sildenafil with other ED medications unless your doctor instructs otherwise.
- Take sildenafil 30 to 60 minutes before sexual activity. It doesn’t work instantly—your body needs time to absorb it.
- The effects can last up to 4 hours, but that doesn’t mean the erection will last that long.
Side Effects
Most side effects are mild and go away on their own:
- Headache
- Flushing (warmth/redness in face or chest)
- Stuffy nose
- Upset stomach
- Light sensitivity or mild vision changes (like a blue tint)
Call your doctor right away if you experience:
- Chest pain or dizziness
- Sudden vision or hearing loss
- An erection lasting more than 4 hours (this is a medical emergency)
