What They are and how they help

At Skippack Pharmacy, we understand that your pet’s vision is just as important as your own. From chronic dry eye to ocular inflammation and viral infections, pets can experience a range of eye conditions that require specialized care. That’s where veterinary ophthalmic compounding comes in. We offer a wide selection of sterile, customized eye medications to help support your pet’s eye health and improve their quality of life.

Why Compounded Eye Medications Matter

Commercial veterinary medications don’t always come in the right strength, formula, or delivery system needed for every pet. That’s especially true when it comes to eye medications, where precise concentrations, sterility, and tolerance are critical. Our compounded ophthalmic solutions and suspensions are prepared in a sterile environment to ensure safety and effectiveness – tailored to your pet’s specific diagnosis and needs.

Commonly Used Medications

We compound a variety of sterile ophthalmic medications using trusted active ingredients such as:

  • Cyclosporine, Tacrolimus, Cidofovir, Idoxuridine, Prednisolone, and more.

These drugs are commonly used to treat conditions like keratoconjunctivitis sicca (dry eye), uveitis, glaucoma, viral infections, and immune-mediated eye diseases.

  • Cyclosporine: A widely used immunosuppressant, Cyclosporine helps manage chronic dry eye and other inflammatory conditions. We offer multiple strengths (0.2% to 2%) in various oil-based and aqueous formulations—including Corn Oil, MCT Oil, and AQ Vehicle—to ensure the best fit for each pet’s needs and sensitivities.
  • Tacrolimus: For pets who do not respond to Cyclosporine alone, Tacrolimus is another effective immunosuppressive option. We compound it in strengths ranging from 0.02% to 1%, available in AQ vehicle, MCT Oil, Corn Oil, or as an ophthalmic emulsion.
  • Cidofovir & Idoxuridine: These antiviral agents are helpful in treating eye infections caused by viruses like feline herpesvirus. Cidofovir 0.5% in artificial tears and Idoxuridine 0.1% in AQ vehicle offer effective options for these challenging conditions.
  • Prednisolone Acetate & Flurbiprofen: Anti-inflammatory medications like these are often prescribed for controlling inflammation, redness, and discomfort in various ocular conditions.
  • Desmopressin & Demecarium Bromide: These agents are less commonly found in commercial forms but can be crucial for treating rare or complex cases, including intraocular pressure disorders and diabetes insipidus-related complications.

We even offer combination formulations, such as Cyclosporine/Tacrolimus blends, for pets who need a stronger or more targeted therapeutic approach

Tailored to Your Pet

Every pet is different. That’s why we compound medications in a variety of bottle sizes (5ml, 10ml, 15ml) and formulations depending on the active ingredient and its ideal carrier. The goal is always the same: to provide your pet with a medication that’s effective, comfortable, and easy to administer.

If your veterinarian recommends an ophthalmic treatment that isn’t commercially available, or if your pet has a hard time tolerating standard eye drops, we’re here to help. We work directly with veterinarians to create sterile, customized medications to support better outcomes—and happier, healthier pets.
