On GLP-1s, fiber + fluids can make a huge difference for constipation and comfort—start low, go slow, and aim for mostly food-based fiber before jumping to supplements.
GLP-1 medications (like semaglutide or tirzepatide) are amazing tools, but they commonly slow digestion—which can lead to constipation, bloating, or “stuck” feelings.
This matters because when your gut feels better, it’s easier to stay consistent with nutrition, hydration, and your medication plan.
This is common—especially when starting or increasing your dose.
What it is
Fiber is the part of plant foods your body can’t fully digest. It helps stool move through the gut and supports regularity.
- Soluble fiber (oats, chia, beans, psyllium) forms a gel and can be gentler for many people.
- Insoluble fiber (wheat bran, some veggie skins) adds bulk and can help, but may worsen gas if you ramp up fast.
Why it matters (especially on GLP-1s)
GLP-1s commonly cause GI side effects like constipation and nausea, partly due to slowed gastric emptying.
Fiber works best with enough fluids—otherwise, “more fiber” can backfire and make constipation worse.
Try this (3–5 tips)
- Start low and increase slowly (think: add one fiber food at a time).
- Pair fiber with water: have a full glass of water with higher-fiber meals/snacks.
- Choose “easy wins” daily:
- Breakfast: oats or high-fiber cereal
- Snack: berries + Greek yogurt
- Add-on: 1–2 Tbsp chia or ground flax (work up gradually)
- Prioritize soluble fiber if you’re bloated: oats, beans/lentils (small portions), psyllium.
- Move a little after meals (even a 10-minute walk) to help gut motility.
For general education only—not medical advice.
Do not change your medication without your prescriber.
If symptoms are severe or persistent, contact your prescriber or seek urgent care.
