COVID-19 continues to change over time, which is why the vaccine is updated from season to season.

For the 2026–2027 season, FDA selected an updated vaccine targeting the JN.1-lineage XFG variant to more closely match circulating SARS-CoV-2 viruses.

Think of it similarly to the way the flu vaccine is updated as circulating strains change from year to year.

The decision is individualized.

Adults 65 and older remain among the groups at greatest risk of hospitalization and severe illness from COVID-19. For people under 65, current FDA indications depend on age, vaccine product, and whether the person has an underlying condition that increases the risk of severe COVID-19.

We carry several options because one size doesn’t have to fit everyone.

Pfizer / COMIRNATY – mRNA vaccine.

Moderna / SPIKEVAX – mRNA vaccine.

Moderna mNEXSPIKE – also an mRNA vaccine, but it is a different Moderna formulation. The 2026–27 dose contains 10 mcg of mRNA and is FDA-approved for adults 65+ and certain higher-risk people ages 12–64.

Novavax / NUVAXOVID – a protein-based, non-mRNA vaccine containing recombinant spike protein with an adjuvant.

All of the 2026–27 formulations have been updated for the XFG variant. There is not one vaccine that is automatically “best” for everyone.

That depends on your age, medical history, previous vaccinations, personal preferences, and which products you are eligible to receive.

Some patients prefer an mRNA vaccine such as Pfizer or Moderna. Others specifically seek out Novavax because it is a protein-based, non-mRNA option.

The choice is yours.

When completing our online registration, select YES when asked whether you have previously received a vaccine through Skippack Pharmacy. This may allow you to bypass many demographic questions already associated with your previous vaccination record.

If you received a COVID vaccine last year, you can still get this year’s updated vaccine.

COVID vaccines are updated from season to season to better match the strains that are circulating, similar to the way flu vaccines are updated each year. The 2026–2027 COVID vaccine has been updated for this season.

For most people, if it has been more than 3 months since your last COVID-19 vaccine, you are eligible for the new one.

People age 65 and older and those who are moderately or severely immunocompromised are at higher risk for serious illness from COVID-19. Protection from vaccination can also decrease over time, especially in older adults and people whose immune systems may not build or maintain as strong of a response.

That is why an additional dose later in the season can help boost protection when you need it most.

In the past years, many seniors have received vaccines every 6 months.  Currently there is no guidance on this.

If your last COVID-19 vaccine was more than 3 months ago, you may be eligible to receive this season’s updated vaccine now, depending on your age, vaccine history, and the product being used.

The reason for another dose is simple: COVID changes over time, and protection from previous vaccination gradually decreases. This year’s vaccine has been updated for the current season, helping refresh your immune system’s protection against the virus strains expected to circulate.

This is especially important for older adults and people who are immunocompromised, because they have a greater risk of hospitalization and other serious complications from COVID-19.

You can still receive a COVID-19 vaccine after having COVID.

People who recently had COVID may consider delaying vaccination for up to about 3 months from when symptoms began—or from the positive test if they had no symptoms.

The best timing can depend on your risk of severe illness, exposure risk, and other individual factors.

Having COVID gives you some temporary immune protection, so waiting about 3 months from when you tested positive or when your symptoms began can help improve the timing of your next vaccine dose.

After that, getting the updated COVID vaccine can help refresh and broaden your protection, especially as immunity from infection decreases over time and new strains continue to circulate.

Common reactions can include:

• Soreness, redness or swelling where the vaccine was given
• Fatigue
• Headache
• Muscle or joint aches
• Chills
• Fever
• Nausea

Most reactions are mild to moderate and resolve within about 1–3 days.

Serious reactions are uncommon. If you have a history of a severe vaccine reaction, myocarditis/pericarditis, or significant vaccine allergy, let our pharmacist know before vaccination.

Possibly.

Having expected side effects such as fatigue, headache, fever, chills or arm soreness does not necessarily mean you cannot be vaccinated again.

If you had a serious allergic reaction, myocarditis/pericarditis, or another significant reaction, let us know before vaccination so we can review what happened and determine the appropriate next step.

Because we carry both mRNA and protein-based COVID-19 vaccine options, there may be alternatives depending on the type of reaction and current guidance.

Yes.

We carry Novavax / NUVAXOVID, which is a protein-based COVID-19 vaccine rather than an mRNA vaccine.

Novavax uses recombinant spike protein together with the Matrix-M adjuvant to stimulate an immune response.

For 2026–27, Novavax has also been updated to the XFG variant.

You can receive your flu and COVID vaccines during the same visit when appropriate.

You may also choose to receive them separately. The choice is yours.

Our registration form allows you to select multiple vaccines, including pneumonia, RSV, shingles, Tdap, hepatitis vaccines and others.

No. Walk-ins are welcome, subject to vaccine and staffing availability.

However, appointments are strongly recommended. Registering in advance allows us to prepare for your visit and gives scheduled patients priority during busy vaccine times.

Returning patient? Select YES when the registration form asks whether you’ve previously received a vaccine at Skippack Pharmacy. Much of your information may already be on file.

If your insurance covers your COVID-19 vaccination at Skippack Pharmacy, your out-of-pocket cost is generally $0.

If your insurance does not cover one of the eligible COVID-19 vaccines below at Skippack Pharmacy — or if you are uninsured — the vaccine itself will still be provided at $0.  A $20 administration fee per vaccine will apply to help cover staffing, vaccination supplies, documentation, and administration costs.

We have extensive experience vaccinating children and offer a private, sensory-friendly vaccination room for children or adults who may benefit from a quieter environment.
