What Is Veterinary Compounding?
Every pet is different.
A medication that works well for one animal may be difficult for another pet to take because of the dose, dosage form, size, flavor, ingredients, or route of administration.
Veterinary compounding allows a pharmacist to prepare a medication in a customized formulation based on a veterinarian’s prescription.
Depending on the pet’s needs, this may include:
- A different medication strength
- Smaller tablets
- A different dosage form
- Flavored oral medications
- Specialized ophthalmic formulations
- A formulation without a particular inactive ingredient when appropriate
Your veterinarian should determine whether a compounded medication is appropriate for your pet.
Compounded animal drugs are not FDA-approved medications. They do not undergo FDA premarket review for safety, effectiveness, or quality in the same way as FDA-approved animal drugs.
When an FDA-approved or otherwise appropriate commercially available medication can meet an animal’s needs, your veterinarian may recommend that option instead.

Why Are Medications Compounded for Pets?
Veterinarians may consider a compounded medication when an available commercial product does not appropriately meet an individual animal’s needs.
For example, a pet may need a strength that is difficult to obtain commercially, a smaller dosage form, a different formulation, or another method that makes administering the prescribed medication more practical.
Compounding can be especially helpful for pets who are difficult to medicate.
However, compounded medications are not automatically better than FDA-approved veterinary products. Your veterinarian should determine which option is appropriate based on your pet’s individual medical needs.

Does my pet need a prescription?
Yes, prescription veterinary medications require an appropriate prescription.
Your veterinarian determines whether the medication is medically appropriate for your pet and provides the directions for use.
Skippack Pharmacy does not diagnose veterinary conditions or independently prescribe veterinary medications.
What if I don't have a prescription or veterinarian?
Skippack Pharmacy can help connect eligible patients with our Physician360 telehealth option for $69.95.
Availability depends on the type of request, your pet’s needs, your location, and applicable veterinary prescribing requirements.
The evaluating provider independently determines whether the consultation can be completed through telehealth and whether a prescription is medically and legally appropriate.
A telehealth consultation does not guarantee a prescription.
Can you transfer my pet's prescription from another pharmacy?
Potentially.
If your pet has an eligible active prescription at another pharmacy, email clinic@skippackpharmacy.com or text 267-766-0076.
Our pharmacy team can determine whether the prescription can be transferred or whether your veterinarian should send a new prescription directly to us.
Do I have to pick up the medication?
No.
You may choose local pickup at Skippack Pharmacy or an available shipping option.
Local pickup does not have an additional fee.
Shipping is currently $30 when applicable.
Shipping method and availability may depend on the medication, destination, and storage requirements.
How quickly will my pet's medication be ready?
Once we have received everything required to process the prescription, many orders can be processed within approximately 1–2 business days.
Actual timing can vary based on the formulation, prescription status, product availability, compounding requirements, weekends, holidays, and shipping.
If your pet needs medication urgently, contact your veterinarian and our pharmacy team rather than waiting for an online order to process.
Why might my veterinarian prescribe a compounded medication?
Some animals cannot use an available commercial medication in its standard form.
For example, your veterinarian may determine that your pet requires a different strength, smaller tablet, different dosage form, specialized ophthalmic preparation, flavor, or other customized formulation.
The decision to use a compounded medication should be made by your veterinarian based on your pet’s individual needs.
Are compounded pet medications FDA-approved?
No.
Compounded animal drugs are not FDA-approved medications.
FDA does not review compounded animal drugs before marketing in the same manner that it reviews FDA-approved veterinary drugs for safety, effectiveness, manufacturing quality, and labeling.
Compounded medications can still serve an important veterinary need in circumstances where an appropriate approved or commercially available medication does not meet an individual animal’s needs.
Your veterinarian should determine whether a compounded medication is appropriate for your pet.
Are these medications covered by insurance?
Skippack Pharmacy currently handles these compounded pet prescriptions on a self-pay basis.
If you have pet insurance, you can contact your plan directly to ask whether you may submit your receipt for reimbursement.
Coverage and reimbursement are determined by your individual pet insurance plan.
Can I use my HSA or FSA card for my pet's medication?
Pet expenses are generally not eligible HSA or FSA medical expenses simply because the product requires a prescription.
Different rules may apply in limited circumstances involving a qualifying service animal.
If you believe your expense may qualify, contact your HSA or FSA plan administrator before using those funds.
What is the expiration date of a compounded pet medication?
Compounded medications have a specific Beyond-Use Date, or BUD, based on the formulation.
Check the medication label and accompanying information for the applicable BUD.
Do not use a medication beyond its labeled date unless specifically instructed by an appropriate healthcare professional.

How should I store my pet's medication?
Storage requirements vary by medication and formulation.
Always follow the storage instructions printed on the prescription label and included with your medication.
Some medications may require different temperature or handling conditions than others.
If the medication has been exposed to unusual heat, cold, moisture, or other conditions—or you are uncertain whether it was stored correctly—contact Skippack Pharmacy before giving it to your pet.
How do I give the medication to my pet?
Follow the directions provided by your veterinarian and printed on the prescription label.
Our pharmacy team can also help explain pharmacy-related administration instructions and provide educational resources for common dosage forms.
If you are unsure about your pet’s dose or treatment plan, contact the prescribing veterinarian before giving the medication.
Can someone at Skippack Pharmacy give the medication to my pet for me?
Skippack Pharmacy does not provide veterinary medication administration services at the pharmacy.
However, our team can help explain the prescription label and provide educational resources for administering common dosage forms.
Your veterinarian can provide additional hands-on guidance if your pet is particularly difficult to medicate.
How do I refill my pet's prescription?
When your pet needs another fill, use our Pet Medication Order & Payment Form.
If the prescription has refills remaining, our pharmacy can process the next eligible fill.
If no refills remain, your veterinarian will need to authorize additional refills or send a new prescription.
What should I do if my pet has a reaction to the medication?
Contact your veterinarian promptly if your pet develops an unexpected or concerning reaction after starting a medication.
Do not make changes to the prescribed treatment plan without speaking with the veterinarian unless you have been given specific instructions for doing so.
If your pet appears to be experiencing a veterinary emergency, contact your veterinarian or the nearest emergency veterinary hospital immediately.
